We’ll look over some
materials with stories of times that people have found common ground or even
friendship that crosses “party lines” of race, religion, nationality, even
politics! We’ll pick some to discuss in
small groups & and seek to identify other examples from life or literature,
of bringing people together in acceptance or even love of their diversity.

**ROTARIANS IN PAIRS. P. 58.
During a state of inter-racial & inter-religious rioting in large
Indian city, the local Rotary Club decided to try the influence of Rotary
fellowship. In pairs the Rotarians of
opposing races and religions walked through the streets arm-in-arm to the
amazement of the rioters of both factions, & shortly peace came to the
city.

Things Considered Daryl Davis is a
blues musician, but he also has what some might call an interesting hobby. For
the past 30 years, Davis, a black man, has spent time befriending members of
the Ku Klux Klan. He says once the
friendship blossoms, the Klansmen realize that their hate may be misguided.
Since Davis started talking with these members, he says 200 Klansmen have given
up their robes. When that happens, Davis collects the robes and keeps them in
his home as a reminder of the dent he has made in racism by simply sitting down
and having dinner with people.

FROM SAFE PASSAGE ON CITY STREETS By Dorothy T. Samuel
**STOLEN HARMONIES,
P. 72: “Baltimore streets are almost empty at night, only an occasional
person flitting home from work, a couple dashing from car to doorstep. Eventually one of these rare pedestrians
came down the deserted street, saw the piano, stopped, and fingered a
chord. Somehow the chord held him. The chord expanded into a melody, one melody
expanded into another. People began to
come out from behind their locked doors, to rub shoulders around the old piano,
to join voice in well-known songs. Eleven-o’clock, midnight, one-o’clock, and
the impromptu party went on. Young and
old, black and white, people who normally rushed by each other with suspicion
or coldness, formed a happy circle of friendliness and sharing and song”.
